Student Visa

1.Student Visa – Subclass 500

Who it is for:

For international students who wish to study full-time in Australia in a CRICOS-registered course. Eligible study sectors include school education, vocational education and training (VET), higher education, postgraduate research, and English language courses (ELICOS).

Key requirements:

  • Hold a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE);
  • Maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC);
  • Meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement;
  • Satisfy English-language and financial capacity requirements;
  • Meet health and character standards.

Visa duration: Usually granted for the length of the enrolled course, up to a maximum of 5 years.

Family members: Eligible dependants (spouse or children) may be included in the same application.

Work rights (since July 2023): Students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and unlimited hours during official breaks or holidays.

 

2.Student Guardian Visa – Subclass 590

Who it is for:

Parents, legal guardians, or relatives accompanying and caring for international students under 18 years old studying in Australia.

Key requirements:

  • The student must hold a valid Subclass 500 Student visa;
  • The guardian must be 21 years or older, and be a parent, legal guardian, or close relative of the student;
  • Must demonstrate sufficient funds for living costs, accommodation, and return travel;
  • Work is not permitted under this visa; study is allowed for up to 3 months in limited circumstances;
  • Must provide suitable accommodation and daily care for the student.

Visa duration: Generally granted for the same period as the student’s visa, or until the student turns 18, whichever comes first.
